Why is it mandatory now to shift from Cement to Tile Adhesives?
Let's put an end to Cement vs Tile Adhesive debate!
28 February, 2023

Tiles are commonly used material in any building’s construction. One gets design versatility, ease of cleaning, simple ways to maintain & repair and durability with use of tiles. Be it ceramic, vitrified or any other type of tiles, no one would like frequent repairs! It is a high time for us in the industry to move on from traditional ‘machan’ way of fixing the tiles to tile adhesives (Non Skid Adhesive - NSA). Here are the scientific reasons behind the same:

Reason 1 – More the water, Less the strength

In traditional way of fixing the tiles, a mixture is made up using sand, cement and water. Tile Adhesives will have polymers for strength, early bonding, stickiness & flexibility in it. And hence, use less water compared to traditional way for the same work.

Reason 2 – Less Porosity in vitrified tiles

More or less, majority of the homes have vitrified tiles now. As they have less porosity, they do not absorb the water. And hence makes it compulsory to have paste like consistency of the material to fix it. Added bonding agent (polymer) makes sure that a consistent creamy paste is made which can help to reduce the water to the optimum level.

Reason 3 – Bigger sizes of tiles

Bigger tiles may have bends in them sometimes. Also, they are heavier. It requires strength of bonding material to keep the tiles up straight vertically and flexibility to handle the jerks/ vibrations. Day by day, world is moving towards less joints and bigger tiles.

Reason 4 – Homogeneous material

While fixing the tiles with traditional way, one is dependent on mixing ability of workers as well as at mercy of worker’s judgmental ability of mixing ratios. Moreover, the process is time consuming! Tile Adhesive is pre-mixed powder with appropriate proportions of cement, various kind of graded sand particles in exact portions and polymers. Tile Adhesives require just water to be added on site and hence makes the tile fixing a mundane routine!

Reason 5 - Self-curing hence more strength

Traditional cement work requires curing with water for better strength. As cement work will be under the tiles, it is next to impossible in cost-effective way to cure with water. Tile Adhesives have self-curing compounds in them and hence more strength compared to traditional way.

Reason 6 - High open time leading to more time to fix the tiles

Added polymers provide extra open time for workers to fix and adjust the tiles. Also, it reduces the wastage.

Reason 7 - Fast setting for early strength

Polymer added Tile Adhesives make are that material sets fast and provide high early strength to done tile work and make the grouting possible on same day/ next day.

Reason 8 - Waterproofing Ability

Tile Adhesives make the surface below tile water resistant. Even in case of water ingress, it delays the water leakage issues. In some cases, it completely prevents – depending on case-to-case basis.

Reason 9 – Thin bed and hence less load on the infrastructure

Evenly spread tile adhesive creates a very thin bed of 3 to 5 mm. It puts less stress on the building infrastructure

Reason 10 – Inexpensive

Surprised? Most of the people believe that tile adhesives are a costlier option compared to traditional way. However, reality is reverse! While calculating the cost, one should consider the labor cost, time involved, re-work, repairs & maintenance due to the bad tile work. With time, tiles are becoming expensive due to designs, sizes, colours, textures and more. Best use of tile adhesive will make sure that such tiles last long. Tile Adhesives are equally important as tiles. Tile may be visible and adhesive may be underneath. But it is the virtue of tile adhesive that keeps the tile in place.
